Firmly believing in the power of a smile, Gustav Ehrenreich created the cheerful Hoptimist movement in the late 1960s. The aim was to design a figure that would constantly remind people of the importance of staying positive and optimistic. For, although the 1960s are often referred to as "the happy sixties," this decade was marked by disturbing events. That's why the joy spread by Ehrenreich's design was welcome in a rather turbulent time.
