Firmly convinced of the power of a smile, Gustav Ehrenreich created the cheerful Hoptimist movement in the late 1960s. The aim was to design a figurine that would constantly remind people of the importance of staying positive and optimistic. For, although the 1960s are often called "the happy 60s," this decade was marked by troubling events. That’s why the joy spread by Ehrenreich's design was welcome in such a turbulent time.
