Firmly convinced of the power of smiles, Gustav Ehrenreich created the cheerful Hoptimist movement in the late 1960s. The aim was to design a figurine that would constantly remind people of the importance of staying positive and optimistic. For, although the 60s are often referred to as "the happy 60s," this decade was marked by disturbing events. This is why the joy spread by Ehrenreich's design was welcome during a rather turbulent time.
