During the Tang dynasty in Central Asia, the Buddhist monk Sanzang is sent to retrieve sacred writings from the western regions. For his protection, he is accompanied by a group of demonic warriors who have been punished by the heavenly court and now have the chance to redeem themselves. Among them are Sun Wukong, the famous Monkey King, Zhu Bajie, the gluttonous pig demon, and Sha Wujing, the gentle ogre. Throughout their 14-year journey, they traverse dangerous mountains and mystical realms where they combat demons, witches, and wild animals. And when there's nothing else to do, they have plenty of opportunities to bicker among themselves.

The Monkey King is undoubtedly the most popular character in the story and a true cultural icon in China and Japan. Armed with his legendary magical staff, he is a daring and experienced fighter. As the most powerful warrior of the group, he has the ability to shrink and travel on clouds at the speed of light.
